What are the chances that a system would have X installed but not xterm?
14:13
<@Tamber>
Could be quite possible.
14:15
<@Tamber>
(With Gentoo, you have to install xterm separately if you want it; and there are plenty of other term emulators.)

< luke>
Hmm. And what's the chance of a terminal emulator returning a non-zero exit code on success (passing through the shell's, perhaps?)
14:43
<@Tamber>
Couldn't say.
14:48
<&McMartin>
Pretty low.
14:48
<&McMartin>
Exit code zero is E_SUCCESS.
14:48
<&McMartin>
If your program returns failure on success that's kind of on you, not the shell
14:50
< luke>
Not my program, the terminal emulator itself. If I run x-terminal-emulator, can I reliably interpret a non-zero exit code to mean that it didn't open properly?
14:54
<&ToxicFrog>
I would say "man xterm", but apparently that's not documented

There are things where I -_- at people On The Internet for not Internetting hard enough, but "web spiders will record useful information about what vulnerabilities your servers haven't patched yet" isn't on the same tier as "when you post things on Twitter or Facebook, people can see theM"

<@gnolam>
NSA IS SPYING ON TWITTER

<@gnolam>
(Hey, we haven't seen that bot in a while)

<&McMartin>
Google dorking is pretty much the most basic thing you can do besides just seeing if "admin/password" works, but I'm OK with educational campaigns re: that~
16:16
<&McMartin>
(Also I didn't realize you could narrow searches by file type, that's honestly pretty neat~)

There's like 20 Defcon videos about using Google.

< luke>
Very useful for finding pdf manuals on messy corporate webaites, I've found.

"Messy" is redundant there

"Not my program, the terminal emulator itself. If I run x-terminal-emulator, can I reliably interpret a non-zero exit code to mean that it didn't open properly?" << Yes. I think it';s in the POSIX standard, but even if it isn't it's accepted convention in UNIX/Linux-land that zero is a successful execution for /all/ programs.
18:29
<@Tarinaky>
luke: WINE/Windows software might do something different, because DOS has/had a different convention
18:30
<&McMartin>
DOS might have, but Win32 doesn't. ERROR_SUCCESS is 0 on anything written in the past 15 years.
18:30
<@Tarinaky>
I thought Windows/DOS had the convention that a positive exit code was a success?
18:30
<@Tarinaky>
Well, a non-negative exit code

18:31
<&McMartin>
There's certain things in like batch where certain errorlevels are set as the result of tests, but I *think* those are the equivalent of shell intrinsics.
18:32
<@Tarinaky>
Well, I think that counts as the last word on the subject then.
18:33
<&McMartin>
Snerk
18:33
<&McMartin>
OK
18:33
<&McMartin>
You're not allowed to return 259, digging into it more >_>
18:33
<&McMartin>
"The GetExitCodeProcess function returns a valid error code defined by the application only after the thread terminates. Therefore, an application should not use STILL_ACTIVE (259) as an error code"
18:33
<@Tarinaky>
If your terminal emulator returns anything other than 0 for a successful execution (whatever that means) then that's a bug in the terminal emulator and you're allowed to wash your hands of the problem :P
19:02
