<~Vorntastic>
(Mac os x has a menu named after the application that contains preferences and quit and some other whole-application stuff)
11:35
<~Vorntastic>
oh, i misunderstood the question.
11:36
<~Vorntastic>
On Mac, closing all the windows tends not to quit the program; the application remains open and the menu bar (which is in a global position not attached to any windows) is still accessible.
11:37
<~Vorntastic>
I don't know if programs that allow multiple windows on windows do things across the board for menu exit too but it might
11:39
<~Vorntastic>
I do remember that back when MS was working on the new UI for office, one thing they noticed in the telemetry was that *several* of the most common commands were "paste", because people would use the button, or the menu, or the keyboard shortcut, or the other keyboard shortcut
11:40
<~Vorntastic>
Or the context menu one

In Firefox, File > Exit does indeed close every window on Windows.

What the hell kind of encoding is this? https://lpix.org/sslptest/index.php?id=224
17:51
<@celticminstrel>
Those are actual question marks so I'm guessing it's a file that got mangled by confused encodings or something.
17:51
<@celticminstrel>
Probably opened in an app that replaces unknown characters with question marks?
17:52
<@celticminstrel>
Weirdly, when I look at the source it seems to be filled with inverse question marks. Unless that's my editor's way of indicating an unknown character…
17:53
<@celticminstrel>
Copy-pasting it into character viewer claims it's just a space. How can that be? I don't have "show invisibles" on and even if I did a space would be a dot, not an inverse question mark.
18:35
< Alek>
maybe a hard space
18:35
< Alek>
or other special character that looks like one but doesn't act like one
18:36
< Alek>
looking... here, it looks like it's supposed to be a single quote.
18:41
< Alek>
or rather, open quotes, apostrophe, and close quotes, all replaced by question mark
18:41
< Alek>
maybe more
18:42
< Alek>
might be one of those international encodings that use something other than English standard single and double quote marks.

I know Russia uses something like double angle brackets for quotations, frequently?
18:46
<@celticminstrel>
There are a ton of quoting conventions, including “…” ‘…’ «…» 《…》「…」 『…』”…“ ’…‘ and even the quote dash.
18:46
<@celticminstrel>
Oh and some languages that use the curly quotes place the opening quote at the baseline instead of raised.
18:47
< Alek>
yep
18:48
< Alek>
I've seen Russian books do that too
18:50
< Alek>
and then Spanish places the inverted question mark at the beginning of the sentence that ends with a question mark.
18:52
<@celticminstrel>
No?
18:52
<@celticminstrel>
Question marks are phrasal in Spanish AIUI.
18:52
<@celticminstrel>
They'll surround a part of a sentence, not necessarily the whole sentence.
18:53
<@celticminstrel>
The closing mark does generally come at the end, but the opening mark is not necessarily at the beginning of the sentence; it's often after a comma or something.
18:55
< Alek>
TIL, thanks
18:58
<@celticminstrel>
I don't think I've ever seen a closing question mark in the middle of a sentence. I've definitely seen it with an opening question mark in the middle, typically with "tag questions".
