< abudhabi__>
Hmmm.
16:09
< abudhabi__>
Is there some serious reason not to use a 4-to-8 converter for an ATX 12V CPU power cable?
16:09
< abudhabi__>
I mean, I've got half the required power bus.
16:10
< abudhabi__>
And there exist things like: https://allegro.pl/oferta/adapter-4-pin-na-8-pin-zasilania-cpu-atx-12v-15cm-11027888467
16:10
< abudhabi__>
I imagine there could be insufficient power.

<@TheWatcher>
The key problem will be what the current rating on the 4 pin cable you're connecting to is, and whether the current drawn through the 8 pin is going to exceed that

Danger of melting?
16:18
<@TheWatcher>
Essentially, yeah. Typically each +12v cable is rated for 10A, so the two +12v cables going to the 4 pin connector will be able to deliver 20A. But if each of the 4 +12V pins the 8 pin connector has are expecting to draw up to that much you might be pulling anything up to twice as much power through the cables to the 4 pin connector as they're rated for. If you're sure
16:18
<@TheWatcher>
that the individual +12V pins of the 8 pin connector will never draw more than 5A you'll be fine, but if not... the wires to the 4 pin might get a bit on the warm or melty side
16:19
< abudhabi__>
Mmmm.
16:19
< abudhabi__>
Maybe better to put an adapter on one of the spare molexes? https://allegro.pl/oferta/kabel-zasilajacy-adapter-molex-do-p4-4pin-atx-5706813244
16:19
<@TheWatcher>
(I might have the amp ratings wrong, it's been ages since I checked, but the principle is the same)
16:20
< abudhabi__>
I understand.
16:20
<@TheWatcher>
And yeah, if you have spare molexes that's a great option
16:21
< abudhabi__>
They have two connectors per cable, so I imagine they are rated for double draw.
16:43
<@PinkFreud>
TheWatcher: heh, i had that happen in an electric lawn mower.
16:44
<@PinkFreud>
wires going to the motor have a connector so you can remove the top to work inside it. said connector melted on me one day - apparently Ryobi underspeced some parts for that mower.
16:45
< abudhabi__>
Did you connect it to an ATX PSU? :V
16:45
<@PinkFreud>
abudhabi__: lol
16:46
<@PinkFreud>
nope, just two of their batteries (which the mower was designed to do!).

17:04
<@TheWatcher>
PF: Huh, that's disappointing. Ryobi are generally not bad :/
17:06
<@PinkFreud>
TheWatcher: i've found that, too. to be fair, we had a fairly rainy week or so, and my grass was *tall*.
17:06
<@PinkFreud>
so the mower melted it's connector while trying to deal with grass that was a bit much.
17:08
<@PinkFreud>
i wound up upgrading the mower anyway, to a power-assisted one - my yard is on a hill, and i have a nearly 8 year old who can start helping with yard maint, so i figured that'd be handy. the old one has it's handle folded down and is sitting on a shelf, awaiting a new connector on those wires.
17:08
<@PinkFreud>
figured i'd use it as a spare if the current mower ever craps out on me.
17:13
<@TheWatcher>
Makes sense, no point pitching it if it just needs connectors replacing (although I might be tempted to use higher gauge wires too, just in case...)
17:14
<@PinkFreud>
the wires going to the motor are already pretty high gauge. didn't check to see what they are precisely, but they're definitely thick.
17:14
<@PinkFreud>
the problem occurred at the center of the connector, so i suspect just the connector was underspecced.
