03:22
<&McMartin>
Anyone know offhand what package provides Xrandr.h?
03:23
<&McMartin>
Because it doesn't appear to be libx11-dev.

I'm getting GLX errors.

But, interestingly, not for the caustics demo the SDK has.

Just the GLUT demo.

If you guys were teaching a class on pyton would you use 3.2.3 or 2.7?
22:43
< celticminstrel>
I would probably use 2.7 just because it's the version I always use for myself, but for someone else I might recommend 3.x. <_<
22:43
< Rhamphoryncus>
That's a difficult question. I'd be tempted to use 2.7 but with future imports
22:46
< mac>
This class will be just to introduce beginners to the basic code structure needed to create programs. Basically I'll be teaching logic, and structures, along with a few other things, it will by no means be a couse on what you can do with python rather, it will be how you can accomplish simple things with coding.
22:51
< mac>
so you think 3.2.3 would be ok for an into class right, assuming these people are going to move up to something C based or java.
22:51
<@TheWatcher>
'up' is an interesting choice of word there~
22:54
< mac>
I simply mean progression from learning the basics of coding. Is there something wrong with using "up" to described a level in the depth of work expected.
22:59
<@TheWatcher>
Nope. But it does imply a superiority.
23:02
< mac>
Take it how you want to, there is no way for me to have control over student, if they want to pursue python they are free to do so... I rather not see interpreted languages, but thats my bias speaking.
23:05
< mac>
Certainly your not implying that interpreted languages are faster than compiled languages (c++). Because if you are, you either are using a very inefficient compiled language, were you really like programming with ASM (which is still can be considered to be somewhat compiled)
23:06
<@TheWatcher>
Good god, who put the chip on your shoulder
23:06
< mac>
You.
23:09
<@TheWatcher>
Python is an excellent beginners language, and a good general purpose one. I don't actually like it (for syntactic reasons), but I certainly recognise its value
23:10
<@TheWatcher>
And I certainly wouldn't claim it is overall inferior or superior to c (java's another matter, but that's a can of worms) - they both have strengths and weaknesses.
23:21
< mac>
agreed. thanks for you opinions guys i appreciate it.
23:21
< mac>
thank you*
23:22 mac [NSwebIRC@Nightstar-fe8a1f12.il.comcast.net] has left #code [""]
23:24
< Rhamphoryncus>
Main reason I'm not using python for gaming is lack of scaling with threads. For singlethreaded you can drop down to C/C++, which in turn can drop down to assembly
23:27
<&McMartin>
"Up" there implies to me "more advanced"
23:28
<&McMartin>
I see mac has left, oh well.
23:28
<&McMartin>
I'd push 2.7 so that they have something they can immediately use on their home computers.
23:28
<&McMartin>
Python is the BASIC of our age, in the good way.
23:48
<@TheWatcher>
Indeed. It's the language I generally recommend people start with these days
