I recently ran into a URL-shortening service intended for academic citation in the sense that it makes a snapshot of the website and a link that is more or less guaranteed to work in the future.

does anyone know its name?

16:13

(Okay, I know; it doesn't shorten, shush.)
16:14

Tamber, I think it mentioned that it was part of some initiative that the wayback machine is also a part of.

I'm not sure if changing numbers at random, swapping <='s for <'s, and replace 1s with -1s for several hours is how debugging is supposed to be done, but it finally works!

Shotgun debugging?

I think I may actually be starting to run low on work...
17:39
< Tamber>
o.o
17:39
< Derakon>
I didn't expect this to happen when my boss and coworker both went on vacation for a lengthy period, but all of the major stuff I needed to get done is done.
17:40
< Derakon>
So now I'm down to more fiddly and/or prospective stuff
17:40
< Tamber>
Could it be because they're /not/ there? ;)
17:40
< Derakon>
You joke, but I'm not a work source in this team; I'm a work sink.
17:40
< Derakon>
That is, other people produce tasks and I complete them; I very rarely produce tasks for other people to do.
17:41 * Tamber was meaning that in the "They're not there to meddle" sense.
17:41
< Derakon>
Yes, and "meddling" largely equates to "producing new tasks".
17:41
< Tamber>
:)

< Derakon>
So, new project that I can at least start planning out: we want to port the microscope code to another microscope.
17:47
< Derakon>
There's been a fair amount of work done to make the other microscope's hardware similar to the current one, but there are still important differences.
17:47
< Derakon>
So I guess the question is, do I fork the codebase or try to make it modular enough to handle those differences with just a config file or something?
17:49
< Derakon>
For one example: the old microscope has a set of motors to move the sample around with respect to the viewpoint (so you can look at different parts of the slide). There's a bunch of UI elements and code dealing with moving the stage, mapping the slide, remembering points of interest, etc. With the other microscope, you manually turn knobs to move the sample around -- no programmatic position control or even position information.
17:49
< Tamber>
I'd say the latter (Of course, this is me at a "I just play with code" level ;); easier to manage changes to the code they share.
17:49
< Derakon>
Well, that's the obvious benefit, yes.
17:50
< Derakon>
The obvious cost is that I have to deal with modifying the shared codebase so it works for both scopes without breaking anything in the process.
17:50
< Tamber>

< TheWatcher>
Having forked, parallel trees for either scope is going to introduce its own problems, though - you'll need to make sure bugs get fixed in both trees if the bug is in code they shared
18:36
< Derakon>
That's the obvious cost to forking, yes. :)
18:37
< Alek>
fork that with a rusty spoon.
18:37
< Derakon>
Looks like there's 21 modules that would need to be modified or removed to take into account missing hardware.
18:37
< TheWatcher>
I /personally/ would go for a modular approach on a single tree. But then I tend to go that way in pretty much all my code.
18:38
< Derakon>
Some of those are trivial (just don't create two entire windows relating to sample positioning), some less so.
18:38
< Tamber>
TheWatcher, well, of course; how else are you supposed to swap the teddy-bear in the middle of it with a sheep-skull when trying to make it work on Mondays? :)
18:39
< TheWatcher>
Oh, you've seen that module in my Megaphone code, then?~
18:40
< TheWatcher>
(seriously though, I actually did do something vaguely equivalent to that on Monday and nobody noticed)
18:40
