I need to go away soon, but I'll ask this is hopes of getting an answer eventually: Is there some kind of log of what you've installed lately on Debian 5? It seems installing playonlinux and its myriad dependancies (from sid) have caused my system to stop seeing the Windows drives, and seemingly failing to see my CD drive for burning purposes, if not for simple data access. Also, is there a boot log somewhere?
17:08

If I can't fix this, I want to downgrade what was upgraded, if that's possible.

Derakon, overkill: arduino.
17:57
< Derakon>
Yeah, no.
17:58
< Derakon>
If I can't do this without some electrical work then I'll just hold off for our backup plan (which requires repairing one of our cameras).

< simon_>
sounds like a job for an arduino. plus, if it's an LED, one of the I/O gets even comes with the necessary resistor built in :)
18:00
< simon_>
s/gets/gates/
18:00
< simon_>
(which means you don't need to solder it on)
18:01
< Derakon>
That's still sufficiently involved that it's not really worthwhile.
18:01
< gnolam>
Pfft. If it's too much of a hassle to solder a resistor to an LED, you can just buy one with an integrated resistor. :)
18:01
< Derakon>
We'd eventually be replacing this with the proper solution, but as I noted that requires repairing one of our cameras.
18:01
< simon_>
1) buy an arduino kit, 2) plug it using USB, 3) put the LED in the I/O gate, 3) flick. flick.
18:01
< Derakon>
This would be purely an interim solution.
18:02
< simon_>
s/buy/borrow/ if you like.
18:03
< Derakon>
Heh.
18:03
< simon_>
gnolam, arduinos come with an integrated resistor on one of its many binary gates.
18:03
< jeroid>
Parallel port?
18:03
< simon_>
sounds like more electricity, jeroid.
18:04
< simon_>
s/electricity/electronics/
18:04
< Derakon>
Simon: unless the device is built to operate off the parallel port anyway, yeah.
18:04
< simon_>
I think that gate even has PWM support, so you could make it light at some intensity level and still have the arduino's full attention.
18:04
< jeroid>
You use that to trigger it. It's about an afternoon of soldering or something.
18:04
< simon_>
Derakon, right.
18:05
< gnolam>
simon_: given that Arduinos are AVR-based and that even the simplest AVRs come with a couple of real-time PWM clocks, I'd be surprised if it didn't. :P
18:06
< simon_>
gnolam, well, it just happens that the output gates are the same.

<@AnnoDomini>
So, nobody can help me?
21:19
< TarinakyKai>
What was the question?
21:19
<@jerith>
AnnoDomini: I don't know enough about apt, sadly.
21:21
<@AnnoDomini>
TarinakyKai: Is there some kind of log of what you've installed lately on Debian 5? It seems installing playonlinux and its myriad dependancies (from sid) have caused my system to stop seeing the Windows drives, and seemingly failing to see my CD drive for burning purposes, if not for simple data access. Also, is there a boot log somewhere?
21:21
<@AnnoDomini>
I've checked dmesg but it isn't the same thing I see when it is booting.
21:22
< TarinakyKai>
/var/log/dpkg.log ?
21:22
< TarinakyKai>
/var/log/apt/history.log ?
21:23
< TarinakyKai>
Tried either of those?
21:24
< TarinakyKai>
http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/reference/ch02.en.html#_package_activity_logs
21:25
<@AnnoDomini>
dpkg.log contains the packets I'd need to somehow downgrade if all else fails.
21:25
<@AnnoDomini>
There is no history.log.
21:25
<@AnnoDomini>
I want to see the messages I get when booting to see WTF is wrong.
21:26
< TarinakyKai>
Ooooooh.
21:26
< TarinakyKai>
That's not what you asked.
21:26
<@AnnoDomini>
"Also, is there a boot log somewhere?"
21:27
< TarinakyKai>
Do you know anything about what shell scripts Debian executes on boot up?
21:27
< TarinakyKai>
Because I'd suggest adding read KEY to one of them to add a hang-point.
21:27
<@AnnoDomini>
I have no idea.
21:27
< TarinakyKai>
Although that'd only work if it outputs that data to term in the first place.
21:28
< TarinakyKai>
I think booting into run level 1 adds a hang point.
21:28
< TarinakyKai>
Do you use grub?
21:30
< TarinakyKai>
If so just reboot, select edit and add a '1' to the end of your Kernel line.
21:30
< TarinakyKai>
(Assuming your config is sane)
21:30
< TarinakyKai>
Which'll boot the system in single-user maintenance mode.
21:31
<@AnnoDomini>
I have single-used grub menu options.
21:31
<@AnnoDomini>
*user
21:34
< TarinakyKai>
That may or may not be correct.
21:34
< TarinakyKai>
That depends on the contents of your menu.1st file.
21:36
<@AnnoDomini>
Okay, I've asked on #debian at Freenode, and enabled bootlog.
21:39
< TarinakyKai>
That might be better than my trying >.>
22:33 * Derakon eyes the commit history for his code.
22:34
< Derakon>
896 commits...I wonder how many of those were purely comments.
22:34
< Derakon>
And how many others were trivial changes.
23:08
< Derakon>
Is there any difference between these two?
23:08
< Derakon>
value = value % 100
23:08
< Derakon>
or:
23:08
< Derakon>
while value > 100:
23:08
< Derakon>
value -= 100
23:08
< Derakon>
(Ignoring differences due to value being negative)
23:09
<@AnnoDomini>
Hmmm.
23:09
<@AnnoDomini>
First gives 0-99. Second gives 1-100.
23:09
<@AnnoDomini>
I think.
23:10
< TarinakyKai>
Nooope. 0-100.
23:10
< Derakon>
No, he's right.
23:10
< Derakon>
If value = 100 then you don't subtract.
23:10
< TarinakyKai>
If value = 0 you don't do anything.
23:10
< Derakon>
So assume it says "while value >= 100" instead.
23:11
<@AnnoDomini>
No essential difference now, that I see.
