<@AnnoDomini>
I need some help with aptitude. I'm trying to install the unstable wine 1.3 version, which does not have a repository that I've been able to find. I've removed wine and libwine, and have used dpkg to unpack (but not configure) the packages supplied. They can't be configured because they have dependancies that need to be resolved. I've added the sid repository and updated apt-get, and now I'm trying to make it give me a suggestion ...
19:57
<@AnnoDomini>
... that will end up installing wine 1.3, rather than removing it and downgrading to 1.1 which fails to satisfy my expectations.
19:58
<@AnnoDomini>
IIRC, g will make aptitude work with the selected solution, but I'm unsure what ! does.
19:58
<@AnnoDomini>
It says "apply".
19:58
<@ToxicFrog>
Toss all of that out, install playonlinux, tell it to grab the latest version of wine for you.
19:59
< celticminstrel>
That's not helpful. <_<
19:59
<@AnnoDomini>
I don't have a week to waste configuring my only computer's OS.
20:00
<@ToxicFrog>
Yes. That is why I suggested POL.
20:00
<@ToxicFrog>
It is seriously the least painful way to use wine.
20:00
<@AnnoDomini>
Switching systems will make me lose a week because I do other things than use WINE.
20:01
<@ToxicFrog>
...what?
20:01
<@AnnoDomini>
Hmmm. What's "playonlinux", then?

20:02
<@AnnoDomini>
I suddenly don't think it's some arcane distribution anymore.
20:02
<@ToxicFrog>
sudo apt-get install playonlinux; PlayOnLinux # Tools -> Manage Wine Versions, pick any version you want and click "add"
20:02
<@ToxicFrog>
It's a wine frontend.
20:02
<@ToxicFrog>
It can manage a seperate wineprefix for each app you have installed, and can also manage multiple wine versions (and run different apps in different versions of wine).
20:03
<@AnnoDomini>
Okay. I have doubts whether this will work, because it seems too easy, but I'll try.
20:03
<@ToxicFrog>
It has canned installation scripts for a lot of common games and programs, and if what you need doesn't have an installer you just say "install unsupported application", point it at the installer, and click "finished" when the installer finishes.
20:04
<@ToxicFrog>
I've been using it for several months now for SE4, Solium Infernum, LogicWorks, and Steam.
20:04
<@AnnoDomini>
The installer, in this case, is a bunch of debs.
20:04
<@ToxicFrog>
...for a windows program?
20:04
<@ToxicFrog>
Why?
20:04
<@AnnoDomini>
No, the wine version.
20:04
<@AnnoDomini>
I'm completely miscomprehending everything.
20:04
<@ToxicFrog>
<ToxicFrog> sudo apt-get install playonlinux; PlayOnLinux # Tools -> Manage Wine Versions, pick any version you want and click "add"
20:05
<@AnnoDomini>
Right.
20:05
< celticminstrel>
Sounds like a program that used WINE to port to Linux?
20:05
<@ToxicFrog>
NO
20:05
<@ToxicFrog>
It is a wine frontend!
20:05
< celticminstrel>
No, I mean what AnnoDomini wanted to install...?
20:05
<@ToxicFrog>
It does the same thing for wine that DBGL does for dosbox, except it can also download new wine versions automatically!
20:06
< celticminstrel>
Unless I'm misunderstanding everything too.
20:06
< celticminstrel>
I get what PlayOnLinux is, though. Sounds like much the same as what I have for Mac.
20:08
<@ToxicFrog>
AnnoDomini: AIUI, you have some windows program you want to run, and you need to run it win 1.3.x. Right?
20:08
<@AnnoDomini>
Yes.
20:09
<@ToxicFrog>
Ok. Then yes, PlayOnLinux will be useful here.
20:09
<@ToxicFrog>
"Manage Wine Versions" is basically a one-click installer for every version of wine ever released. It installs them into ~/.PlayOnLinux/WineVersions/, and you can run them from there normally.
20:10
<@ToxicFrog>
You can also install your windows programs into POL (rather than using the wine versions it downloads directly) and it'll segregate each one into its own C:/ and let you pick different versions and configurations for each one and whatnot.
20:13
<@AnnoDomini>
If I have pre-installed applications, will I need to reinstall and stuff?
20:16
<@ToxicFrog>
No, but it won't detect or segregate them automatically either - you'll either need to run them from outside POL with POL's updated wine (maybe symlink /usr/bin/wine to ~/.PlayOnLinux/WineVersions/1.3.something/usr/bin/wine ?) or create a config file telling POL where to find the stuff that you have installed already.
20:17
<@ToxicFrog>
Basically, if you want wineprefix segregation you'll need to reinstall, if you don't want that but do want to run them through the POL launcher you'll have to create a configuration for each one, and if all you want to do is use POL to automatically download recent wine versions you don't even need to do that.
20:19 * AnnoDomini installs a lot of updates required by POL.
20:19
<@ToxicFrog>
(what distro are you running, anyways?)
20:19
<@AnnoDomini>
Okay, got POL running.
20:19
<@AnnoDomini>
Debian 5.
20:20
<@AnnoDomini>
Okay, let's say I just want one version of wine.
20:21 * AnnoDomini decides to add the latest.
20:22
<@AnnoDomini>
ToxicFrog: How do I run the already-installed applications from POL?
20:23
<@ToxicFrog>
As in using POL's wine version, or using POL's launcher?
20:23
<@AnnoDomini>
I'm not sure.
20:24
<@AnnoDomini>
I've got POL running, and have installed a wine version using it.
20:24
<@AnnoDomini>
But the main window looks devoid of applications. How do I add them there?
20:25
<@ToxicFrog>
'Install'. But this is slightly unintuitive for adding stuff you already have installed.
20:26
<@ToxicFrog>
First of all, do: $ ln -s ~/.wine ~/.PlayOnLinux/wineprefix/preinstalled_apps
20:27
<@ToxicFrog>
Then back to POL: Install, Install a POL package or unsupported application, manual install
20:27
<@ToxicFrog>
Choose "edit an application already installed", and choose preinstalled_apps as the wineprefix containing it
20:28
<@ToxicFrog>
Tick "associate a wine version with the program" and choose the latest
20:29
<@ToxicFrog>
Finally, when it asks you for a program to execute, it's expecting an installer there. Just pick something harmless like notepad.exe.
20:29
<@ToxicFrog>
Run and exit, yes I would like to create a shortcut to this program, choose the exe for the program you actually want to run.
20:30
<@ToxicFrog>
Go through that and it'll ask you if you want to create a shortcut again. Keep answering yes until you have one for every program you want to launch through POL, then choose no.
20:31
<@ToxicFrog>
This is the "proper" way to do it; you can also just manually create a config file for each program in ~/.PlayOnLinux/configurations that looks something like, say, this:
20:32
<@ToxicFrog>
#!/bin/bash
20:32
<@ToxicFrog>
PATH="$HOME/.PlayOnLinux/WineVersions/<version>/usr/bin/:$PATH"
20:32
<@ToxicFrog>
export WINEPREFIX="$HOME/.wine"
20:32
<@ToxicFrog>
cd /path/to/installed/program
20:32
<@ToxicFrog>
wine "c:/program files/foo/foo.exe"
20:33
<@ToxicFrog>
And finally, you can just dispense with POL entirely and go:
20:33
<@ToxicFrog>
PATH="~/.PlayOnLinux/WineVersions/<version>/usr/bin/:$PATH"; wine foo.exe
20:34
<@AnnoDomini>
Okay, thank you. It sorta works, even if this particular version of WINE I've installed doesn't cut it either.
20:34
<@ToxicFrog>
:/
20:34
<@AnnoDomini>
I'll experiment with other versions.
20:35
<@AnnoDomini>
The program I want properly handled is Magic Workstation. Wine 1.0.1 almost manages it correctly, except the cards in play are upside down.

<@AnnoDomini>
Hrm. Only the one I've tried originally comes close to perfection.
20:46
<@AnnoDomini>
The upside-down cards are a little annoying, but at least everything else works correctly.
20:47
<@AnnoDomini>
1.1 doesn't render cards at all, 1.2 and 1.3 render them occassionally, but upright, and fail to display several UI elements.
