<@AnnoDomini>
I've started writing up a script for it, when I realized that even for 2 people, the problem isn't so very trivial.
00:02
<@Vornicus>
Well, for two people it's 16 hours. For three it's... 13 hours.
00:05
<@AnnoDomini>
By what algorithm did you arrive at that?
00:06
<@Vornicus>
Well, you start with 12 hours - this gives everybody 4 hours of watch and 4 hours of sleep.
00:06
<@Vornicus>
er, 8 hours of sleep.
00:07
<@Vornicus>
Then you have to add an hour because the guy in the middle has to have a 9th hour of sleep.
00:11
<@MyCatVerbs>
Mango: yes, but add salts and it's fine.
00:12
<@AnnoDomini>
I'm still not sure where you got the 12 from, though.
00:12
<@Mango>
MCV, thanks
00:12
<@MyCatVerbs>
Mango: also, use a better hash than MD5. SHA1 or one of the really wide SHA variants like SHA-512.
00:12
<@Mango>
Righto :)
00:12
<@MyCatVerbs>
Mango: no matter how good your hash is, salting is not optional, by the way.
00:12
<@MyCatVerbs>
Salt with at least 24 bits of randomness too, please.
00:14
<@MyCatVerbs>
e.g. SHA-512 with a 32 bit salt would be total overkill, but you wouldn't regret it unless you totally blew your CPU time budget.
00:14
<@MyCatVerbs>
Also, why on Earth would you want to do this anyway?
00:15
<@Mango>
Bank requires an adjustment transaction ID for refunds
00:15
<@Mango>
I thought one way of finding it would be searching by credit card number
00:16 * MyCatVerbs attempts to think about this.
00:17 AnnoDomini [AnnoDomini@Nightstar-29390.neoplus.adsl.tpnet.pl] has quit [Quit: We sense... something... something ancient... a sickly smell... a chilling wind. My ancestors scream from within their chambers in my mind but I cannot understand their words. This feeling... a memory? It sickens us, and for the first time in our lives for the first time in generations... We fear.]
00:17
<@Mango>
I think what I'll do instead is just show the staff member a list of transactions and get them to pick the right one
00:18
<@Mango>
it'd be an extra couple of steps, but it'd be more secure
00:18
<@MyCatVerbs>
I -think- that precludes salting, which would be really really bad. If you can't do salting, it's a suicidally bad idea. If you can, make damn sure you actually can, but then it's not particularly evil at all.
00:19 * Mango nods
00:27

AnnoDomini: isn't this just the Pigeonhole Principle?
00:27

Oh, he left.

13:44
<@jerith>
MyCatVerbs: No, just vastly newer phpBB.
13:44
<@MyCatVerbs>
I see. All previous themes broken somehow
13:51

yeah, nobody has the time to go in and fix that. :)

too many custom mods in the old version, didn't translate well to the new one.

< Zellfaze>
anyone here do any cgi scripting?
21:41
< Zellfaze>
specifically in PERL?
21:41
<@jerith>
cgi is easy.
21:41
<@C_tiger>
I like perl but no I don't do cgi scripting...
21:41
< Zellfaze>
i keep getting error 500
21:41
< Zellfaze>
when i try to run my script
21:41
< Zellfaze>
and i cant figure out the problem
21:41
<@jerith>
That's a server error.
21:41
<@jerith>
Is your script logging anything?
21:41
< Zellfaze>
i know that
21:42
< Zellfaze>
my script is a simple hello world script
21:42
<@jerith>
Can you pastebin it?
21:42
< Zellfaze>
i just need to learn how to get them running right
21:42
< Zellfaze>
ya
21:43
<@C_tiger>
I wonder what happens if the script throws an error.
21:43
< Zellfaze>

Oops, forgot about that. Sorry.
21:44
<+Zellfaze>
tis ok
21:45
<+Zellfaze>
see nothing ellaborate
21:45
<@jerith>
Hmm.
21:45
<@ToxicFrog>
\r\n\r\n
21:45
<@jerith>
Perhaps you want \r\n instead of just \n?
21:45
<@jerith>
Yeah, that. :-)
21:45
<@ToxicFrog>
HTTP mandates CRLF.
21:45
<+Zellfaze>
\r whats that mean?
21:46
<@ToxicFrog>
Carriage return.
21:46
<+Zellfaze>
ok
21:46
<@jerith>
It's a carriage retun.
21:46
<@jerith>
+r
21:46
<@ToxicFrog>
Originally "return the print head to the start of the line"
21:46
<@ToxicFrog>
\n, linefeed, was originally "move down one line"
21:46
<+Zellfaze>
didnt help
21:47
<@ToxicFrog>
*nix uses LF for newlines; macs use CR. Windows uses CRLF, as does HTTP.
21:47
<@ToxicFrog>
In that case, all I can suggest is checking your server logs.
21:47
<+Zellfaze>
I tried
21:47
<@ToxicFrog>
Increasing the logging level if necessary.
21:47
<+Zellfaze>
the server uses direct admin, and direct admin must not be pointing to the logs correctly
21:48
<@ToxicFrog>
Aah, you don't have shell on the server?
21:48
<+Zellfaze>
not that i know of
21:49
<@ToxicFrog>
You're sure perl is in /usr/local/bin?
21:49
<@ToxicFrog>
You're sure the file ix +x?
21:49
<+Zellfaze>
the file is 0755
21:49
<+Zellfaze>
and i am not sure of the location of perl
21:49
<@ToxicFrog>
/usr/bin is much more common
21:49
<@jerith>
Try /usr/bin/env perl
21:49
<+Zellfaze>
da says that several perl modules are installed, but no other users have used perl here
21:49
<@C_tiger>
is there perl installed at all?
21:49
<+Zellfaze>
ok
21:49
<@jerith>
That should find it if it's in PATH.
21:50
<@ToxicFrog>
jerith: assuming env is in /usr/bin
21:50
<@ToxicFrog>
It's in /bin on my machine
21:50
<+Zellfaze>
its /usr/bin/ on mine
21:50
<@jerith>
ToxicFrog: What OS?
21:50
<@ToxicFrog>
Fedora
21:50
<+Zellfaze>
xubuntu
21:50
<@jerith>
It's in /bin and /usr/bin on my Fedora.
21:50
<@ToxicFrog>
(it's symlinked from /usr/bin, though, so either will work on my system)
21:51
<@ToxicFrog>
Zellfaze: yeah, but what's the server running?
21:51
<+Zellfaze>
no idea
21:51
<+Zellfaze>
lemme ask
21:51
<@ToxicFrog>
But yeah, jerith's suggestion is good. See if that work.
21:51
<@ToxicFrog>
*works.
21:51
<+Zellfaze>
it doesnt
21:52
<+Zellfaze>
(04:52:39 PM) Rvec: linux and freebsd
21:52
<+Zellfaze>
(04:52:44 PM) Vrythramax: debian linux I think
21:52
<+Zellfaze>
(04:53:01 PM) Vrythramax: I could be wrong
21:53
<@ToxicFrog>
Well, without the logs, there's no telling what the error is
21:53
<@ToxicFrog>
And without that, troubleshooting is kind of hard
21:53
<+Zellfaze>
i think i could have figured it out with logs to help
21:53
<+Zellfaze>
perhaps if i wait until tommorow so i have access to the log backup, then try again
