07:03 * EvilDarkLord is having extensive trouble booting up his Windows machine, ponders if someone might be willing to lend a hand.
07:06
< EvilDarkLord>
(Whenever I boot, either in problem-resistant mode or normally, it flashes a BSOD and reboots)
07:08
< EvilDarkLord>
Could have something to do with me running a defrag on it just before.
07:09
<@TheWatcher>
What's the start of the error report on the bsod?
07:09
<@TheWatcher>
I'm guessing you've got a corrput driver
07:09
<@TheWatcher>
a corrupt one, too
07:10
< EvilDarkLord>
Ack. The BSOD flashes by pretty quickly, hang on while I try to make some sense of it :)
07:11
< EvilDarkLord>
The last working configuration isn't operational either.
07:11 * Mahal blinks at EDL
07:11
<@Mahal>
I am having that exact problem with a server today.
07:13
<@TheWatcher>
IIRC there's a mode where you can manually specify which drivers to load? Try using that and, if you hit a driver load that bsods then you've probably found the culprit...
07:16
<@Reiver>
Safe mode, TW?
07:17 * EvilDarkLord lists his mode choices: Safe mode, safe mode with network, safe mode from command line, last working configuration, and normal boot.
07:17
<@TheWatcher>
eugh
07:17
< EvilDarkLord>
What I get to choose in Safe mode is only whether to load SPTD.sys and a347bus.sys
07:18
<@Reiver>
Try command line?
07:18
< EvilDarkLord>
I've tried them all several times :)
07:18
<@Reiver>
Ow.
07:18
<@Reiver>
I then reccomend you reboot. ;)
07:19
< EvilDarkLord>
Thanks for the tip, but the system is already pretty cooperative when it comes to booting all the time.
07:19
< EvilDarkLord>
Did you get yer problem diagnosed/fixed, Mahal?
07:20
<@TheWatcher>
Try not loading a347bus.sys - that's an alcohol virtual driver anyway
07:20
< EvilDarkLord>
Same result.
07:20
<@Mahal>
EDL: I'm able to get into safemode, so apparnetly not same problem.
07:21
< EvilDarkLord>
Ditto for any other loading combination of those two files.
07:21
<@Mahal>
I"m running virus scans yadda yadda.
07:22 * EvilDarkLord hms. Virus software up to date, I haven't visited any sites likely to devour my computer, and the firewall is working.
07:30
< EvilDarkLord>
Er. What would be the next step in fixing? Getting an install CD?
07:30
<@Reiver>
Probably. :/
07:31
<@Reiver>
There's only so much you can do with windows...
07:55 * EvilDarkLord asks Stupid Question(tm). If I am forced to reinstall, will the hdd have to be formatted first?
07:57
<@Reiver>
Depends whether you wish to attempt a Repair install, or a clean install.
07:57
<@Reiver>
If the first, no. If the latter, you've little to gain from /not/ doing it...
07:57
<@Reiver>
Either way, if you can backup, I would.
07:58
< EvilDarkLord>
Hrm. Could move the hard drive into another computer temporarily and do it from there?
07:58
<@Mahal>
Yes
08:00
< EvilDarkLord>
Luckily I don't have that much actual important data around. Mostly things that will just take a while to reinstall (Though all my CDs including the XP one are 100 km away, grah)
08:01
< EvilDarkLord>
Hm. Will the install cd have to be the one that came with the computer to work for a repair install?
08:01
< EvilDarkLord>
Or could I borrow another if I can find one?
08:01
<@Reiver>
The install CD that came with should /probably/ do it.
08:07
<@TheWatcher>
Depends, some cds that come with off-the-shelf boxen will just reformat the drive to the factory install default
08:07
<@Reiver>
...Ow.
08:07
<@TheWatcher>
They aren't 'real' windows CDs, just automated reset ones.
08:07 * Reiver had not seen those. Thankye for the warning.
08:08
<@Reiver>
...In a sense it's not terribly a bad idea for idiot-proofing, but.
08:08
< EvilDarkLord>
What would happen if I used the CD of a friend with XP?
08:09
<@TheWatcher>
Provided it was a real install CD (legal or otherwise) it should work as expected.
08:09
< EvilDarkLord>
So it won't check for whether the cd is the same at any point of the installation?
08:11
< EvilDarkLord>
Well. I'll try to get home today and find my XP cd plus any other important CDs I might need if I need a clean boot.
08:11
< EvilDarkLord>
*clean install
08:11
< EvilDarkLord>
Thanks for the help, people.
08:13
<@Reiver>
NP.
08:13
<@TheWatcher>
No, any install CD should work fine.

< EvilDarkLord>
I fiddled around with another install CD, but it told me me 'no hard drive detected' (lies says BIOS). The edition of XP is different though - Home vs Pro, and the language is also different. Nevertheless, I was wondering if not detecting a hard drive for the recovery panel is bad news.
10:06
<@Reiver>
Is it an SATA hard drive, EDL?
10:07
< EvilDarkLord>
Yar.
10:07
<@Reiver>
Because straight XP doesn't /support/ SATA - you'll need to dig up drivers.
10:07
<@Reiver>
And then install them during the install phase that asks for SCSI drivers.
10:08
< EvilDarkLord>
Right. And it presumably can't use the drivers from the home edition because they're, well, different editions?
10:08
< EvilDarkLord>
(Not reinstalling here, just trying to open up the recovery panel)
10:08
<@Reiver>
Neither Home nor Pro support SATA natively.
10:09
<@Reiver>
Not straight off the CD anyway, unless it's a... Service Pack 2 CD or somesuch.
10:09
< EvilDarkLord>
Weel, the *original* windows home had service pack up already.
10:10
< EvilDarkLord>
Though I didn't actually install it, it was predone by the manufacturer :)
10:10
<@Reiver>
Then they would probably have put the custom drivers in during install.
10:10
<@Reiver>
It's no trouble - but you need to get hold of the drivers. Search the web, they're out there somewhere...
10:14
< EvilDarkLord>
I think they also came with the pack - there was this huge array of drivers for my system on one cd. It's just that all that stuff is back home 100 km away, so I tried using a friend's cd first in hopes of clearing it up without that travel.

<@Reiver>
You don't need to travel.
10:18
<@Reiver>
Google for a set of SATA drivers and you'll be able to continue as normal.
10:18
<@Reiver>
(This is the point that having a running boxen is sorta, um, /useful/.)
10:42
< EvilDarkLord>
Hm. Assuming I didn't misuse the computer especially, is having to reinstall the worst case scenario?
10:45
<@Reiver>
Wiping the hard drive is.
10:47
< EvilDarkLord>
Well, should have formulated that as a clean install. Still, I can live with that. I had a few course files there I could lose, but they were mostly for my own learning so no biggie.
