I have a fibre-optic modem feeding into the router. If I plug something directly into the router via CAT5, I get the full 300 Mbps I pay for.

If I plug that cable into a switch ( https://www.tp-link.com/pl/home-networking/soho-switch/tl-sg1008d/#specifications ), then what I get is either 10 Mbps or 100 Mbps depending (apparently) on how close the power cables run to the CAT5 cables.
