ugh, I really am happy to have switched to NixOS, but I find that there's no beginning or end to this ball of yarn.

< sshine>
how do you switch keyboard layout? in terminal, loadkeys. in X11? setxkbmap. in Wayland on NixOS? No idea, but the guides suggest I should convert my configuration.nix to a flake and install Home Manager. I'd *love* to do that, but can I get my keyboard layout in order first???

<&[R]>
Oof
21:39
< sshine>
it's actually pretty easy: servies.xserver.xkb.layout = "..."; # this works for Wayland, too, because of some magic they call XWayland.
21:39
< sshine>
but the problem is, every single WM/DE in existence overrides this in each their way.
21:40

I just went with GNOME for easy defaults, and apparently you can't easily override its keyboard settings without... you guessed it... install home manager, since GNOME's keyboard settings live in $HOME/.config
21:42
< sshine>
so I thought, I'll get around to it. but maybe a shorter path is just install Sway (which is i3 for Wayland). I've been meaning to switch to Wayland at some point I got a Linux distro that made it effortless. I might've run it with Ubuntu without knowing it. I'll go with the flow and run Sway. turns out Sway also needs $HOME/.config/sway specific configuration to change its keyboard. so home manager needs to
21:42
< sshine>
be there, too.
