<&[R]>
Watching The Linux Cast, and they had an interesting discussion question. "If you could change one thing in the Linux ecosystem software-wise (not the community), what would it be?" Personally for me I'd like it if more software provided a composable hook that you could access via some common means, like how wmii or acme provide 9p interfaces to automate and interface with them. What about you?

<&ToxicFrog>
I think d-bus is trying to be that feature, and it seems to be fairly widespread.
15:52
<&[R]>
I never found the d-bus documentation to be grokable TBH
15:58
<&[R]>
I'll have to put some more effort into it I guess
16:04
<&ToxicFrog>
I mean, neither have I, but I think that's attempting to be the "composable hook accessible via some common means"
16:07
<&[R]>
Yeah, I agree, I just always forget about it because the tooling is so inaccessable
16:11
<&ToxicFrog>
For basic "send a message" usage it's just `dbus [program id] [component path] [function] [args]`, and if you run with with fewer arguments it gives you listings, e.g. no args shows you everything it can talk to, just giving it a program ID lists all the components it has, etc
16:11
<&ToxicFrog>
Er, qdbus, not dbus
16:11
<&ToxicFrog>
But once you get into more complicated stuff than that it gets hairy
16:11
<&ToxicFrog>
I just use it for things like remotely wiggling the volume control

[R], if you can't grok it, maybe you can ask Grok :P
