15:02 | < abudhabi> | I've got a new Windows machine with surprisingly poor performance in any game I try running on it. Any tips on what I should check for possible causes? |
15:02 | < abudhabi> | I've got a Linux machine that can run these games pretty well despite being inferior in CPU and GPU departments. |
15:03 | < abudhabi> | I've verified that the dedicated GPU is even being used (according to Task Manager). |
15:03 | < abudhabi> | RAM does not appear full. |
15:03 | <~Vornicus> | cpu usage? |
15:05 | < abudhabi> | Says it's about 22% CPU used. |
15:11 | < abudhabi> | Hmm. |
15:12 | < abudhabi> | The two CPUs involved are: |
15:12 | < abudhabi> | https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/sku/78931/intel-core-i74710mq-processor-6m-cache-up-to-3-50-ghz/specifications.html |
15:12 | < abudhabi> | https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/sku/97496/intel-core-i77820hq-processor-8m-cache-up-to-3-90-ghz/specifications.html |
15:13 | < abudhabi> | Way I figure, anything that runs on the former should run on the latter *better*. |
15:16 | < abudhabi> | Aha! WTH. |
15:17 | < abudhabi> | Task Manager lists "procesor graficzny" as being in maximum use. |
15:21 | < abudhabi> | Assuming Task Manager is correct that the dedicated GPU is in use (not certain), the two cards compared are: |
15:21 | < abudhabi> | https://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-Quadro-K1100M.98901.0.html |
15:21 | < abudhabi> | https://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-Quadro-M2200-GPU-Benchmarks-and-Specs.210908.0.html |
15:56 | < abudhabi> | Reinstalling graphics driver time. |
16:09 | < abudhabi> | Did not help. |
16:10 | < abudhabi> | I'll wait for the HDMI monitor to arrive. Maybe it's some garbage regarding the integrated monitor or something. |
16:18 | <&[R]> | Performance profiles? |
16:18 | <&[R]> | Are these both laptops? |
16:18 | < abudhabi> | Yeah. |
16:19 | <&[R]> | I would suspect the windows laptop is not on "maximum performance" |
16:22 | < abudhabi> | Where's the performance profile settings? |
16:22 | <&[R]> | Under power management |
16:28 | < abudhabi> | I fiddled with that and there's absolutely no change. |
16:29 | <&[R]> | I'm out of polite solutions. Try asking ltt forums? |
16:32 | < abudhabi> | >polite |
16:33 | <&[R]> | Install an OS on the laptop with Windows on it. |
16:33 | <&[R]> | :p |
16:33 | < abudhabi> | The whole point of the laptop is having Windows. |
16:33 | < abudhabi> | So I can play games I can't play on Linux. |
16:36 | < abudhabi> | I'll just wait a while longer. This is too annoying to continue trying to deal with today. |
16:39 | <&[R]> | Serious about posting on LTT |
16:40 | < abudhabi> | I will look into this. |
16:40 | <&[R]> | https://linustechtips.com/forum/46-troubleshooting/ |
16:41 | <&[R]> | https://linustechtips.com/forum/85-windows/ <-- or that one |
16:41 | < Alek> | M says mobile, so yeah, looks that way |
16:42 | < Alek> | dammit IRC, you said you were scrolled down all the way! |
16:42 | <&[R]> | Yeah |
16:42 | <&[R]> | THat happens |
16:44 | < Alek> | yeah uh the Quadro series is fairly old these days, I think. |
16:45 | < Alek> | the second of those 2, while a newer chip, is still equivalent to a GTX 965 in power, apparently. which is pretty darn old. |
16:46 | < Alek> | I forget where, but there should be a setting in graphics settings somewhere in Windows to make sure it's using the graphics card instead of any integrated graphics. |
16:48 | < Alek> | just out of curiousity, what does dxdiag report? |
16:49 | < Alek> | oh and what's the RAM on both of the laptops? the graphics cards probably use it for shared VRAM |
16:57 | < abudhabi> | Oldness is irrelevant, because the *older* card performs well, while having worse specifications. |
16:57 | < abudhabi> | The new laptop has 16 GB RAM. This gets nowhere near filled when running the game. |
16:58 | < abudhabi> | The game is Factorio, if it matters. |
16:59 | < abudhabi> | Alek: What exactly should I be looking at in dxdiag? |
17:02 | < abudhabi> | It says it's using Microsoft Basic Display Adapter. |
17:11 | < abudhabi> | Disabling that in Device Manager increases the resolution, but does not improve game performance. |
17:37 | | Vornicus [Vorn@ServerAdministrator.Nightstar.Net] has quit [Connection closed] |
18:11 | < Alek> | yeah uh, I highly recommend installing nvidia's drivers |
18:13 | < abudhabi> | I did, twice. |
18:51 | <@gnolam> | It's not using the wrong graphics card by chance? |
18:51 | <&[R]> | That seems to be the issue |
18:52 | <&[R]> | Actually I just remembered something |
18:52 | <&[R]> | There's an Intel-Nvidia tech, that makes the integrated intel GPU and nvidia GPU work cooperatively |
18:52 | <&[R]> | The drivers for that might be missing |
18:52 | <&[R]> | Or if they aren't, maybe try turning them off |
18:53 | <&[R]> | Bumblebee or somesuch IIRC |
18:53 | < Alek> | dxdiag, display 1 tab, what does the device section say? |
18:56 | <@gnolam> | ... ah, I wasn't scrolled all the way down. |
19:00 | < abudhabi> | Alek: Scroll up. |
19:00 | < abudhabi> | Or, hm, that might not be what you asked. |
19:01 | < abudhabi> | Anyway. I'm 200% done with this for today. |
19:01 | < abudhabi> | I'll just wait for my new monitor to arrive so I can see what happens when it uses an external display. |

20:56 | <@macdjord> | abudhabi: Factorio is a spite-based game with no 3d graphics at all. Any modern system should be able to handle its graphics perfectly. If you're having performance problems, it's almost certainly a CPU or memory bottleneck limiting the game's ability to update its simulation (a large factory contains a *lot* of moving parts). |
20:59 | <@macdjord> | I know you said Task Manager wasn't reporting high CPU usage, but that might be misleading; if you have, say, a 10-core processor, a single-threaded app which is CPU-bound will show as '10%'. |
20:59 | <@macdjord> | I'm not saying Factorio is single-threaded, but it might be that there is some single-threaded task within it which is acting as the bottleneck. |

21:09 | < Alek> | spite-based, ha! |
21:11 | < abudhabi> | macdjord: It's lagging on the *main menu*. |
21:13 | < abudhabi> | This is also not the only game that does this. I've tried running Spelunky 2 and Deep Rock Galactic, with essentially the same issue. |
21:13 | < abudhabi> | They all run as if I were trying to run a game specced for Pentium 166 on a Pentium 100. |
21:14 | <@macdjord> | I'm out of ideas, then. |
21:15 | < abudhabi> | It might just be some CPU issue, but it's not obvious. |
21:15 | < abudhabi> | On the Linux machine, CPU use is about 5%, not 25%. |
21:19 | < abudhabi> | But if it were the CPU, I'd have expected <100% GPU use. |
21:20 | < abudhabi> | AFAIK if the CPU chokes, the GPU gets less work to do. |
