<&McMartin>
welp, looks like I'll have to split my next classic mac article up into three pieces instead of two
05:34
<&McMartin>
Because I need to insert *a gigantic temper tantrum* revolving around "I tried to change the icon on my application partway through"
05:34
<&McMartin>
I would like to note that the official process for doing this is outlined in an 18-step process on pages 826-827 of "Inside Macintosh Toolbox", and requires rebooting the computer while holding down Command-Option.
05:34
<&McMartin>
Remember: mouse-driven GUI environments are much better because all the information you need is immediately presented to you, and you don't have to memorize dozens of arcane commands!
05:38
<@celticminstrel>
Cmd+Option… was that flushing the Finder cache or something?
05:38
<&McMartin>
Yes
05:38
<@celticminstrel>
Fun!
05:38
<&McMartin>
Because apparently timestamps are for loser microsoft droids
05:39
<&McMartin>
Also: this *didn't work* because I have three emulated environments here, and when Finder refreshes its cache it sets an "inited" bit *in the file* that tells Finder... or, apparently, *other* Finders... to ignore the file when you rebuild the cache and just... keep the old value around, I guess.
05:39
<&McMartin>
You can turn that bit off!
05:40
<&McMartin>
... with ResEdit. Finder will not let you do this.
05:40
<&McMartin>
I did not expect to come away from this Mac project with a deepened appreciation for the transparency and discoverability of fucking Windows 3.1, but there you have it
05:41
<&McMartin>
Win95 basically heralds an entirely new epoch, so treating 1995 as a breakpoint, the clear winner for me so far in early consumer GUI systems is Amiga Workbench 3.x
05:42
<&McMartin>
For added fun, an Amiga 1200 cost a fifth as much as a Macintosh II
05:59
<&McMartin>
It's been awhile since I've recycled Vorn's old line
05:59
<&McMartin>
20:07 <~Vornicus> It's Insanely Great
05:59
<&McMartin>
20:08 <~Vornicus> Which is to say it's actually not all that great, the community is full of jerks with superiority complexes, the tutorial materials read like marketing, and terrible ideas are official recommendations.
06:01
<&McMartin>
At least Inside Macintosh manages to *mostly* not read like marketing.
06:01
<@celticminstrel>
Kinda curious what Vorn was talking about there.
06:04
<&McMartin>
Ruby, but it's also a slam by reference at Apple in the era shortly after the era I'm actively investigating here.
06:06
<&McMartin>
Apple doesn't get parity with Windows 95 until 1997 or so and doesn't exceed it until 2001.

I now believe that this driver was designed and coded by literal monkeys with typewriters.
10:42
<@gnolam>
Whose work was then taken by a heavily medicated handler to a separate set of data entry monkeys without proofreading.

*And* some of the basic functions needed to use it might not hard lock the entire hardware, requiring someone to manually power cycle it!
