When I connect my phone to my PC and activate file transfer, then go to the folder with my phone's photos in it - does anybody know a way to control in what order the files are loaded?
02:34
< Mahal>
Android or iOS?
02:35
<@macdjord>
The connection is slow enough and the number of files in that directory large enough that just loading the filenames and thumbnails takes a nontrivial amount of time. Unfortunately, the files seem to load ~in order of creation, whereas I almost always want the *newest* files so I can copy them to the PC.
02:35
<@macdjord>
Mahal: Android phone, Win10 (soon to be Win11) PC.
02:36
<@macdjord>
Note: These are all auto-named photos, so file creation order and alphabetical order are identical. So loading 'most recent first' or loading 'reverse alphabetical' would both satisfy my needs.
02:46
<~Vornicus>
command line supremacy
02:48
<@macdjord>
Vornicus: Command line doesn't give me thumbnails so I can figure out which pictures are the ones I want to copy.
03:24
<&ToxicFrog>
macdjord: it's probably going to load them either in the order it wants to display them or the order the MTP/PTP driver supplies them in.
03:24
<&ToxicFrog>
In the former case, change the display order in your filesystem browser to "by date, most recent first" or similar and see if that helps.
03:25
<&ToxicFrog>
In the latter case, there's not much you can do other than use a completely different way of getting the files off it, like SFTP, syncthing, or adb.
03:25
<@macdjord>
ToxicFrog: Tried that. No appearent effect.
03:25
<@macdjord>
Curses.
03:25
<&ToxicFrog>
(my approach is to use syncthing to sync the entire photos directory whenever the phone is charging and in wifi range; this means it happens in the background as part of normal use and then I can import the photos from local storage)
03:29
<@macdjord>
ToxicFrog: Overkill for my needs. My use case is 'plug phone into PC, copy 1-3 out of the most recent 10 photos to desktop, move phone back to standalone charger'.

I seem to recall when learning about temporal logic that there's a distinction between temporal quantifier that speaks of futures as ones that may happen and ones that will happen...
09:27
<@sshine>
kind of like "there exists a point in the future" could either include now or has to be at a discrete time step beyond now.
