Whoa - for once, the USB connection to this [industrial machine] isn't just secretly to a built-in USB<->RS232 converter.
07:30
<@gnolam>
It's to a USB<->RS485 converter!
07:36
<@gnolam>
And the actual protocol is... uh...
07:37
<@gnolam>
It's SOP to have human-readable commands. Nyet! Magic numbers all the way!
07:44
<@gnolam>
Bonus points for using nanoliters as the unit though. I'm so unused to seeing "nl" that I didn't even parse it as a unit at first.
08:02
<@gnolam>
... sorry. Magic numbers, /AES-encrypted/. Because fuck you, that's why.

<CO2> This Dutch guy decides to convert his old toaster into a deep-frying pan to fry his snacks. I uh, I don't think you need to understand Dutch to be horrified every other minute by what he's doing here. Don't try this at home. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HFvNpf4mGrk

< Kizor>
That reminds me, is duct taping a HDD to the bottom of the inside of your case a bad idea?

It's been working for me, but with how hopeless I'm at hardware I'm concerned I'll manage to overheat it or something. >.>

HDDs are pretty reslilient to heat AIUI

They need to be 70C or lower
17:18
< abudhabi>
Figures. They aren't heat-hardened because they don't make as much heat as a CPU does.
17:22
<@TheWatcher>
Kizor: look at its heat using something like COUID HWMonitor or something. If the HDD is below 45C or so, you're fine. Cooler is better, but what I'd generally be more concerned about with loose harddrives is mechanical stress - accidentially knocking the machine meaning the drive might get damaged, or hit something else. But if it's well-secured down and not too warm,
17:22
<@TheWatcher>
you'll be fine.

It's below 45C, so gratz.

*gracias.
17:26

...well, I think it's at exactly 45.0C.

So I mounted a CD image as a virtual CD drive so I could mount it in dosbox as a CD drive so I could use it in emulated Windows 3.1 as a CD. I'm feeling a misplaced sense of accomplishment for that.
