Tamber: Actually, I figured it out. I was getting annoyed at YouTube notifications on my phone - I don't *watch* YouTube on my phone - and went into the settings to disable them. But apparently, despite the section being labelled 'Mobile Notifications', turning it off turned off *all* notifications, including on desktop.
