< Kizor>
Welp. Deleted a whole bunch of archive files by mistake. I'm an idiot.
14:08
<@TheWatcher>
>.<
14:09
< Kizor>
I immediately stopped using that partition. I've gone through it with Recuva and undeleted all I can, but is there anything else I should be doing wrt data recovery?
14:12
< Kizor>
Anything else to be done than a pass with an undeleter set on thorough?
14:12
<@TheWatcher>
No really
14:13
< Kizor>
Yeah
14:13
< Kizor>
Recuva is listing a ton of these as having clustrers overwritten by other files - files that I didn't move there after the deletion.
14:14
< Kizor>
So has some automatic defrag or the like moved a whole bunch of stuff around and turned an inconvenience into a disaster?
14:15
< Kizor>
That said, I just recovered a file Recuva listed as "unrecoverable".
14:16
< Kizor>
I just freaked out for a moment when its readme had a bunch of incomprehensible characters in the head, but turns out it's .wri and not .txt.
14:17
< Kizor>
Imma clever.
14:20 Degi [Degi@Nightstar-jbjqa3.dyn.telefonica.de] has quit [Connection closed]
14:22
< Kizor>
Follow-up question: a ton of these are .7z files containing .iso or .bin files.
14:23
< Kizor>
Files that Recuva says have clusters overwritten by other files are recovered just fine. The archives extract, the images mount, the files on those images are legible.
14:23
<&ToxicFrog>
I'm not familiar with Recuva, but I suspect that the recoverer is pessimistic and perhaps can't tell what order files have been deleted in
14:23
<&ToxicFrog>
So it can't tell if deleted file A was partially overwritten by deleted file B or vice versa
14:23
< Kizor>
Yeah. These archives pass 7-zip's archive integrity tests, but Recuva still says that they have clusters overwritten.
14:25
< Kizor>
Should I think I've gotten the archives back undamaged? I'm afraid that these archives seem alright but have bits of XCOM sound clips sticking out of them.

FWIW, the image files I had extracted elsewhere have the same file sizes as the ones in the archives.

Kizor: if they pass validation they're intact.
15:49
< Kizor>
tyvm.
15:49
<&ToxicFrog>
Or they're damaged in vanishingly improbably ways.
15:54
<&ToxicFrog>
(specifically, to pass, the data needs to be well-formed -- so the compressed data can't contain references to dictionary entries that don't exist yet, has to have the right length, etc -- and the decompressed file contents need to match the CRC32 recorded in the archive header.)
15:54
<&ToxicFrog>
(it's probably not hard to deliberately modify an archive to have these properties. The odds of it happening by accident are infinitesmal.)
16:22
< Kizor>
Cool, thanks.

I, on the other hand, spent about half an hour looking in my mailboxes and our ticket database looking for stuff documenting the hand-over process and finishing of a project

because supposedly one of the things i did was left 'unfinished' and didn't work
17:01

despite the fact that we tested it with the user and it was confirmed to work properly.

which the user still confirms that happened.
