<~Vornotron>
Reiv: so I've been looking into, essentially, infinite generation of voronoi diagrams. My plan was approximately to: 1. generate delaunay triangulations in regions; 2. for each region, take those points from neighboring regions that might connect to this region's triangulation; 3. rejigger the triangulation accordingly; 4. generate the dual
05:09
<@Reiv>
That sounds awesome.
05:09
<@Reiv>
It would be even more awesome if I understood several of those words, but that is not your fault~
05:09
<~Vornotron>
It turns out that this is basically a known technique, so I'm not insane

WHY GOD WHY
08:30
<@gnolam>
Why do people insist on pasting screenshots into Word documents and mailing them instead of just /attaching the fucking screenshots/!?
08:57
< simon_>
gnolam, I used to correct compiler assignments where people had taken smartphone photos of their illustrations and included them in reports. whenever they did that, I'd write my response in a document, print that document, take a picture of it, include that picture in a document and send them that as feedback. :-D
09:00
<@gnolam>
:D

12:06
<@TheWatcher>
gnolam: I've had that multiple times, and the only answer I've ever managed to extract from people is that they don't know any way to just send the screenshot
12:07
<@TheWatcher>
They use the prtscn button to grab the screen, and then paste it into word because "It just works"
12:07
<@Tamber>
Reduce it to a problem they've already solved: sending word documents~
12:08
<&[R]>
gnolam: I dealt with a woman who would write her emails in word, save that, and send /those/
12:08
<@Tamber>
*wince*
12:08
<&[R]>
No email body.
12:08
<&[R]>
Just a fucking attachment
12:09
<@TheWatcher>
I assume you managed to find a good place to hide the body, though?
12:09
<&[R]>
She lived/worked in a different country
12:10
<&[R]>
So there were some logistical issues there
12:11
<@TheWatcher>
Blegh
13:02
<&Reiver>
Let's be fair
13:03
<&Reiver>
When you have a screenshot in your buffer, where /do/ you paste it? It was only relatively recently you could paste a simple image into an email, especially a web-based client.
13:03
<&Reiver>
Before then you need ed to attach it /somehow/, and Windows was singularily bad at letting you do that - probably the best tool for most folks would have been futzing about with Paint, which is definitely not the most intuitive method.
13:03
<&Reiver>
But you could always paste a picture into a Word document in modern memory, and mailing a Word document is trivial.
13:04
<&Reiver>
Just because it is the wrong solution does not mean it was not sensible given the UI obscufication of the time!
13:04
<&Reiver>
Even my favored screenshot app, Greenshot, doesn't actually let me /paste shit/ into its editor, much as this makes me sa d.
13:23
<@TheWatcher>
Reiver: look at irfanview, then.
13:24
<@TheWatcher>
does screenshots, supports paste, does basic image editing in-place, ridiculously small footprint, has an excellent thumbnail browser mode, and on..
13:29
<&Reiver>
oh man, I remember irfanview from /so long ago/
13:29
<&Reiver>
Is that still around? lol.
13:29
<&Reiver>
holy shit, it still is
13:29
<&Reiver>
And it is still available from CNET
13:29
<&ToxicFrog>
Pretty sure it's still the best windows native image viewer
13:29
<&Reiver>
How the hell is CNET still a thing
13:30
<&Reiver>
Greenshot + Paint.NET pretty much replaced most of my day to day needs for it, alas
13:30
<@TheWatcher>
Reiver: not only still around, still being updated - last update was end of feb
13:30
<&Reiver>
So I forgot it existed somewhere around Windows 7
13:30
<&Reiver>
No harm or foul, just, y'know
13:30
< Vorntastic>
I actually disliked irfanview but I don't remember why
13:30
<&Reiver>
iirc it has a non-commercial liscence or something
13:32
<&Reiver>
I'll be damned, it's even on the Windows Store
13:32
<&Reiver>
Sure, why not I'll do it there
13:33
<&Reiver>
Anyway, while this is fun to rock the oldskool
13:33
<&Reiver>
I'll note that to come up with an /actually decent solution to my problem/ I just downloaded and installed an app
13:33
<&Reiver>
Plenty of folks literally can't do that
13:33
<&Reiver>
This is why you get screenshots in Word documents~
13:34 * Reiver is pleased that standards finally started letting us hit 'paste' into web pages, but it's certainly not an item of trivial ancient history.

23:39
< Vornucopia>
also, oh god
23:39
< Vornucopia>
okay.
23:45
< Vornucopia>
So, delaunay triangulation. the methods I've found so far are, um. "completionish"
23:48
< Vornucopia>
or, how do I put it. YOu are required to have the entire dataset before you start, even if it's one of the ones where you add points one at a time, because you must guarantee you start with an extreme point of some sort.
23:50
< Vornucopia>
But in the case I'm working on, I have a situation where I'm adding more points later, and I am guaranteed to have some of those points *beyond* my extreme point.
23:52
< Vornucopia>
Fuck, vorn, you're a mathematician, you've worked in projective spaces. this should be easy. Make the triangle the entire plane by picking three convenient points at infinity.
23:53
< Vornucopia>
Okay! Problem over.
