gnolam: the documentation was last updated last month.
00:33
<&ToxicFrog>
It just claims that this feature that was removed years ago is, in fact, still present.
00:33
<&ToxicFrog>
The best(?) part is that the feature still exists in the Debian scripts that ubuntu uses as a basis for this, and works fine!

What are its compeditors in that space? PHP, Python, Ruby, Perl. PHP's got a reputation of being a noobie language. Ruby's reputation is that it's slow and full of security holes (RoR!). Perl's... why would you touch perl after 1995? Python has twisted, but it's not the default. Out of those four, one would probably use python.
11:19
< Vornlicious>
I wish I could have picked Python for a lot of web projects back when I was doing them. Everybody else in the room only knew PHP though which angered me.

<@Tamber>
TempleOS is impressive, yes. Somewhat bizarre, sure; but impressive nonetheless.
18:38
<&McMartin>
Also worth remembering it is literally the product of madness.
18:38
<&McMartin>
Though it's not clear to me that its earlier forms were.
18:46
<&ToxicFrog>
Vorntastic: at a guess -- it used to be that PHP was the "zero barrier to entry" language, because it was installed on ~every web host no matter how cheap.
18:46
<&ToxicFrog>
These days, it's JS, because every browser has a JS REPL, debugger, and IDE built in.
18:46
<&ToxicFrog>
So you have a lot of people who got into programming with JS frontend stuff, who now want to work on backend stuff.
19:09
<&jerith>
That's an interesting article.
19:26
<&jerith>
McMartin: By "nerfed" you mean "made a little more expensive"?
19:35
<&McMartin>
jerith: Yes, but this renders almost the entire "cost" leaderboard moot
19:36
<&McMartin>
It is now the case that "an arm and a track" can be cheaper than a piston, and before it never was.
19:36
<&jerith>
Yup.
19:36
<&McMartin>
Before, an arm and a two-step track was the equal of a piston and so there was no reason to ever do that; a fixed piston was strictly better.
19:36
<&jerith>
I was mostly checking that there weren't other changes that I haven't seen.
19:37
<&McMartin>
Now an arm and a *three* step track is still cheaper than a fixed piston.
19:37
<&McMartin>
Of course, in trying to fix that up, I then found some solutions where I just didn't need a piston *or* a track.
19:37
<&McMartin>
Pivots help for that a lot, it turns out~
19:38
<&jerith>
An arm and a two step track could always do certain motions that a piston couldn't.
19:38
<&McMartin>
Indeed, but I found that I often ended up needing piston + track to really do those things right
19:38
<&McMartin>
"Single-handedly operate a Purifier Glyph" being the big one.
19:40 * McMartin reads that TempleOS article
19:40
<&McMartin>
It's worth noting that a lot of the groundwork for that was done *before* God started talking to him, and at that point it still had sample apps like working flight sims.
19:40
<&McMartin>
(And was, IIRC, called something like "LoseThos")
19:41
<&McMartin>
The notion of it being a "Research OS" is a really good angle to take.
19:42
<&McMartin>
He's not the only one, though; a fine team of not-literal madmen share their knowledge as they work on their projects on the OSDev Wiki.
19:44 * Tamber wonders if programming that is what drove him mad...
19:44
<&McMartin>
Also I totally have a copy of Mapping The Commodore 64 and it's really good
19:45
<&McMartin>
Tamber: Unlikely. Obsessing over a quixotic, ultimately useless project makes you the metaphorically mad, and risks divorcing you from the common experience of others and makes communication and society difficult.
19:45
<&McMartin>
He has the kind where he hears voices in his head and thinks they're supernatural beings, viz. is in fact actually a schizophrenic.
19:45
<@Tamber>
Mmmh, point.
19:46
<&McMartin>
I reject the claim that the mental illness fuels the work, because it obviously didn't for the more famous case of "my terminal emulator grew legs"
19:47
<&McMartin>
And various less famous hobby projects that may be summarized as "my bootloader grew legs"
19:47
<@Tamber>
*nods*
19:47
<&McMartin>
(For those not familiar with the quote, "My terminal emulator grew legs" is Linus Torvalds describing the early versions of Linux)

21:19
<@TheWatcher>
Buf C, MapPlane and the functions it calls
21:20
<@TheWatcher>
I think
21:21
<&McMartin>
Is it running a raytrace algorithm in the fragment shader instead of actually submitting geometry?
21:21
< Degi>
Is that a game in a shader?
21:21
<@TheWatcher>
Yes
21:21
< Degi>
Intriguing...
21:22
< Degi>
Oh, it prevents me from crashing with the ground, collision detection in a shader... Nice
21:23
<&McMartin>
I'd say "this feels like solving the wrong problem" but it's a very demoscene thing to do.
21:26
<&jerith>
Yay, top of my list for everything in OM chapter one.
