basically it goes like this: you have a bunch of tiles, some black, some white. all the tiles of the same color are contiguous. there are no 2x2 tiles that have all the same color.

<@TheWatcher>
At this point I think this student is /deliberately arsing up the indentation to fuck with me/
13:02
<@Emmy-werk>
Whelp, do i smell a failing mark?
13:03
<@TheWatcher>
That's the problem
13:03
<@Emmy-werk>
oh?
13:04
<@TheWatcher>
the code works, is generally correct, uses sensible variable names, has largely decent commenting... and looks like it was indented using the output of a spectrum analyser at a rave
13:04
<@Emmy-werk>
LOL XD
13:05
<@TheWatcher>
It's not even /consistently/ badly indented; there's variable numbers of spaces per level in here!
13:05
<@Emmy-werk>
0.o
13:06
<@Emmy-werk>
hmmmh. Not sure what grading scale you use, but maybe substract a small point and comment on the student's indentation needing more attention next time?
13:06
<@TheWatcher>
Yep, I am doing
13:06
<@Emmy-werk>
</Unsolicited advice>
13:06
<@TheWatcher>
And did last time
13:06
<@TheWatcher>
And the time before.
13:06
<@Emmy-werk>
Ah
13:07
<@Emmy-werk>
Perhaps it's time to substract more than a small point. @.@
13:07
<@Emmy-werk>
or, time/chance permitting, comment on it in person for more effect.
13:08
<@TheWatcher>
(10 marks per exercise, one goes on indenting, one on commenting, one on naming and general readability, the remaining 7 go towards different things depending on the exercise)
13:08
<@Emmy-werk>
Ah
13:12
<@TheWatcher>
But yes, my suspicion I'm being trolled. You'd have to /work/ to indent this badly.

13:13
<@Emmy-werk>
hmmmh. I take it failing marks for trolling the teacher aren't a thing. :P
13:17
<@TheWatcher>
Nah. I need to be fair; we have an external examiner system in the UK, where the exercises, grades, feedback, and so forth are reviewed by academics from other institutions to make sure we grade consistently and aren't lenient or harsh to an individual student, even if they are trolling us.
13:23
<@Emmy-werk>
Ah
13:23
<@Emmy-werk>
Fair but somewhat dysfunctional, i suppose. :P
13:24
<@TheWatcher>
It is occasionally deeply frustrating, especially when the external has decided to be... awkward
13:24
<@Emmy-werk>
heh.
13:24
<@Emmy-werk>
i can imagine
13:25
<@TheWatcher>
But it does have the advantage that it makes it much harder for individual academics to be total arses to their students.
13:25
<@TheWatcher>
Or at least, harder for them to get away with it.
13:26
<@Emmy-werk>
True, but it also makes it harder for the grading academics to guide them to a better performance through other means than the dry grading.
13:26
<@Emmy-werk>
which, after all, is a means, not a purpose.
13:41
<&[R]>
TheWatcher: is it a valid whitespace program?
13:43
<@TheWatcher>
It's C, so whitespace is largely irrelivant, so from that point of view it's "valid".
13:44
<@Emmy-werk>
The trouble of course is that, bad indenting, like other readability issues, is a magnet for bugs and errors.
14:02
<&[R]>
Right
14:02
<&[R]>
But it could still be a valid program written in whitespace, the language.
14:05
<@TheWatcher>
... That's a terrifying idea
14:05
<@TheWatcher>
And one I need to check
14:07
<@Emmy-werk>
lol

23:34

Blargh, I think I need to consider all possibly paths in order to get an "admissible" heuristic...

23:43
<@celticminstrel>
Oh, wait, I think I am. I should be able to just use the plain taxi-cab distance for the heuristic, right?
23:44
<~Vornicus>
what makes something admissible
23:45
<@celticminstrel>
I'm doing A*, so it can't overestimate the cost. (In fact I think I remember you telling me that before.)

Apparently keys are automatically casted to strings. That's oddly convenient.
23:57

Well, assuming you're using an object with overridden toString().

<@celticminstrel>
