00:48
<@simon>
gnolam, Dutch is great. a lot of stuff translates literally from Danish. :) like "tandpasta"!
00:49
<&McMartin>
The general word for those are "calques"
00:49
<&McMartin>
Calques are fun
00:49
<@gnolam>
simon: The "U kunt ..." signs are the best.
00:50
<@simon>
gnolam, hehe.
00:50
<@simon>
gnolam, that only made sense when I spoke it aloud inside my head with my worst Dutch accent.
00:50
<&McMartin>
(A Finn of my acquaintance once described Finnish as a language designed by redneck elves, offering as an example that they called the hippopotamus a "river-horse")
00:51
<&McMartin>
(... I then had to explain what "hippopotamus" in fact meant)
00:51
<@gnolam>
McMartin: and they took most of those from Swedish. :)
00:51
<@gnolam>
I think Afrikaans might be even slightly funnier than Dutch though, if nothing else than for "soundtrack" being "klankbaan".
00:52
<&McMartin>
Is English unusual amongst the Germanic languages for bouncing its compounds through Greek?
00:52
<@simon>
Afrikaans is funny. I have one South African friend and his acquaintances are so strange to listen to.
00:52
<@simon>
it's like a mash-up of English, Dutch and a dozen other things I have no idea what is.
00:53 * McMartin has met at least one of the .za-ites here, actually, his English sounded fine
00:53
<@simon>
right
00:53
<@simon>
that's my impression, too.
00:54
<@simon>
although my SA friend is an English teacher, so my limited sample is biased. :P
00:55
<@simon>
I listened to Die Antwoord for a while, and they say that there's at least a dozen languages in South Africa.
00:58
<&McMartin>
I find that claim very easily believable
00:58
<@Azash>
McMartin: To be fair it's not quite as formal a term either
00:58
<@Azash>
It's more like stream horsie
00:59
<@simon>
Azash, are you Finnish?
01:00
<@Azash>
Correct
01:00
<&McMartin>
I should clarify that the Finn of my acquaintance in this case was not Azash. :)

04:36
<&[R]>
Yeah
04:36
<&[R]>
Just remember: it's not a VM
04:37
<@mac>
Currently, our setup is the smallest possible set of people have access to the production machine... because anyone who has access has tota, unobstructed root access to everything on that machine.

04:38
<&[R]>
Yeah, I'd look at something that does automatic VM provisioning instead.
04:38
<@mac>
Plans were in place to get proper, seperate user accoutns set up for the various services on each machine.
04:39

Including giving some people access to their docker containers.

mac: actually I remember a write-up on how to make a very locked down (using mount's read-only FS feature) system. I'll see if I can dig it up for you.
04:53
<&[R]>
However, if you're using something esoteric like systemd, you'll probably end up with a misbehaving daemon that doesn't function.
04:53
<@mac>
Throw me a link; I'll pass it along.
04:57
<&[R]>
I might not find it, it's been almosta decade
04:58
<@mac>
Oh, not Docker-specific, then.

<&[R]>
No, but it'll mitigate some attack vectors that docker issue can do (specifically ones that alter things only root can)
05:01
<&[R]>
However, it requires heavy use of partitioning the system.
05:01
<&[R]>
I think it's like a minimum of 15 partitions?

<&[R]>
Yeah, I don't know if it's still online, can't find it
05:19
<@mac>
Ah, well.
05:25
<&[R]>
General gist of it was to make everything its own partition pretty much.
05:25
<&[R]>
IIRC the only things on / itself were /mount /bin and /root
05:26
<&[R]>
/etc became a readonly partition, /usr was likewise made readonly
05:26
<&[R]>
If you needed to update, you had a special boot mode setup where it'd boot in full read-write, but wouldn't start any daemons.
05:26
<&[R]>
Shame I can't find it, it was really, really detailed.
05:28
<&[R]>
However, as I think about, a docker image might be able to remount one of the read-only partitions as read-write... which defeats the purpose.

05:43
<@mac>
Eh. We're just getting past the hump of dockerizing. I doubt going back to VMs will be a well-received suggestion.

I was going to refer to Borges'es essay "The Analytical Language of John Wilkins" and say that all you need is a proper encyclopedia of everything, but couldn't remember the title even by googling, and so I had to take down a book from my shelf and find out. and that feels really great, even though it happens very rarely, that books are a better source of knowledge than google. :)
