<@macdjord>
Is there some sort of video card tester? Like, the equivelent of Memtest?
03:24
<&McMartin>
glxgears, dxdiag, GPU-Z
03:24
<@macdjord>
My desktop keeps bluescreening. The Almighty Google suggests that the error message in question is most likely either a bad driver, a bad video card, or bad memory. Memtest comes up clean, and I haven't installed any new drivers lately, so...
03:25
<&McMartin>
Hrm
03:25
<&McMartin>
The problem with graphics cards is that they aren't just something you can write to each cell in and see if it works
03:26
<~Vornicus>
They're not a big truck
03:26
<&McMartin>
They're a series of processing tubes?
03:26
<~Vornicus>
Not sure series is exactly sensible either~
03:27
<&McMartin>
Pipeline stages >_>
03:27
<@macdjord>
McMartin: I /suspect/ it may be a temperature-related thing; one it happens it /keeps/ happening - sometimes before the reboot even finishes - but leaving ot off overnight seems to help for a while.
03:28
<~Vornicus>
well okay~
03:28
<@macdjord>
I'm currently testing this by using Afterburner to underclock the GPU by 50% and force the fan to max; I'lll see if this staves off the problem.
03:28
<&McMartin>
... yeah, actually, now that you mention it
03:28
<&McMartin>
That happened to me last year
03:28
<&McMartin>
I took it to the shop, and they hauled out what looked like a shopvac and deployed it on my GPU fans
03:28
<&McMartin>
And then life was good
03:29
<&McMartin>
GPU-Z will record your temperatures
03:31
<@macdjord>
... I wonder how hard it is to turn the GPU off entirely? That would at least allow me to use the machine until I can get this fixed. Problem is, I /think/ the paralel port that drives the monitor is off the video card and there is no one direct from the motherboard. If I accidentally turn the whole thing off, I'm running blind.
03:31
<&McMartin>
Er, uh, yeah
03:31
<&McMartin>
Unless you can rock Optimus or something
03:31
<&McMartin>
You kind of need a GPU so as to P your G.
03:31
<&McMartin>
So you can only turn that one off if you have a spare.
03:33
<@macdjord>
McMartin: Well, right now, my GPU useage is holding at a steady 0% with very occasional spikes, according to Afterburner. I'm not currently doing anything 3D at all, so there would seem to be no reason it couldn't run on pure CPU software rendering.
03:36
<@macdjord>
Basically, I've underclocked it to 50% because that's the lowest Afterburner goes. I want to go the rest of the way - let it drive the monitor while doing no actual /processing/ whatsoever.
03:47 Kindamoody[zZz] is now known as Kindamoody
03:49
<&McMartin>
Right, but, I mean, the GPU is also responsible for maintaining the frame buffer &c and, you know, generally talking to the monitor
03:50
<&McMartin>
That doesn't happen for free; we didn't even remotely get it right until the 1990s
04:03
<@macdjord>
I was under the impression that that stuff was handled by the /video card/, but did not nessisarily require the /GPU/.

05:04
<@macdjord>
Hrm. Playing a youtube video makes my GPU temp rise from ~48C to 53C - yet the utilization still showd 0% with tiny spike every few seconds.
05:04
<&McMartin>
The shutdown temp tends to be around 90C.
05:05
<@macdjord>
So either a utilization of <1% is enough to significantly heat my card, or... maybe it's causing a rise in CPU use, and having a knockon effect of the GPU?
05:05
<@macdjord>
... no, CPU average is only going from ~12% to 15%.
05:06
<@macdjord>
Maybe it's the occasional spike is just enough to keep the card from going to power0save or something like that?
05:08
<@macdjord>
McMartin: Again - pretty sure it's not a legitimate overheat-shutdown; I wasn't doing anything graphics-intensive at /all/ when these crashes happened. Often they were happening /at the Windows login screen after a reboot/.
05:09
<@macdjord>
Hrm. Video is over, temp now hovering at 51.
05:12
<@macdjord>
Now it's come back down.

<@macdjord>
Whelp, pretty sure it's /not/ a GPU-temperature issue. Just had another whack of bluescreens. I didn't catch the temp right at the end, but as of a couple minutes before, it was still hovering at 48-53 C.
06:33
<@macdjord>
And it was at half speed and max fan the whole time.
06:34
<@macdjord>
Maybe it's an oveheat issue on the CPU?

I bought a 2 year warentee extension 2 years, 8 months ago, so it's a matter of how much time I had left on the warente before then

mac: nevertheless, spellcheck doesn't catch everything. neither does grammar check.
20:37
<@macdjord>
Alek: No, but I can usually tell when I've got a word wrong; I just don't care enough to look it up for casual communication.
20:37 * Alek reads several fics by this one prolific writer. apparently a non-native English speaker. the plot is halfway entertaining, good vocabulary..... except SO much of it is misused, mixed metaphors and similes, wrong figures of speech, etc.
20:37
<@macdjord>
Uhg. I know what you mean.
20:37
<@Alek>
it's actually pretty painful to read at times. I'm debating giving up on that writer.
20:38
<@macdjord>
My pet peeve is people using 'insure' when they mean 'ensure'.
20:38
<@Azash>
Alek: I recommend http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Fanfic/HalfLifeFullLifeConsequences
20:38
<@macdjord>
Alek: Which writer?
20:38
<@Alek>
not to mention a somewhat poor grasp of relative anatomy.
20:38

<@Alek>
megamatt09
20:38
<@macdjord>
Never read him.
20:50
<@Alek>
his style actually differs JUST a bit fic to fic, too. some are better than others.
20:50
<@Alek>
he's very lemony, so he's not on ffn as much.
20:51
<@Alek>

<@Alek>
some real good stuff there, some average, and some piss poor.
21:08
<@Alek>
the general rules are, only HP related fics.
21:08
<@Alek>
but a few are.... well, only the names are taken from HP, otherwise they could be very easily filed off.
21:10
<@Alek>
I see that robst has started a new fic, now that Harry Crow is done.
21:11
<@macdjord>
Sturgeon's Law, man.
21:12
<@Alek>
I think it was robst that was doing a fic, called "Taking the PISS" or some such. it was a rewrite of an earlier version. however, it's been taken down, now, and I can't find it any longer. D:
21:12
<@Alek>
it may not have been his, but that's the name that currently pops to mind.
21:13
<@Alek>
I like crackfics. they're fun, and a good anodyne to the drama of life and of more serious fics.
21:13
<@Alek>
crackfics with plot are even better.
21:13
<@Alek>
so it was a bit upsetting to see this one missing.
