How I sometimes imagine code reviews: "5 stars, would merge again." "0 stars. Two PEP-8 violations and one of the methods was written in INTERCAL."

<@Thalass>
If i take a hdd from one computer, and put it in another, the system still should boot, right?
09:51
<@Thalass>
I'm rebuilding my pc with a new motherboard/cpu/ram tonight, keeping the gpu, hdd, and optical drive.
09:52
<&jerith>
Thalass: Probably depends on drivers and such.
09:52
<&jerith>
Most things should be sufficiently generic, though.

Woot. The new motherboard and CPU are the same brands as before, afaik, so hopefully i won't lose my data.
10:00
<@Thalass>
Though if i recall, i have the OS on its own partition, so i shouldn't lose data anyway
10:03
<~Vornicus>
Even if it were you could -- tehcnically -- just install the correct stuff for the motherboard and have done with it. If that's even stored on the drive

<@Thalass>
augh. New system will boot, but is flakey, especially with the cheap bluetooth dongle i have for mouse. And it doesn't seem to want to boot from USB for a new operating system. frustrating.
15:41
<@Thalass>
It is, of course, a uefi motherboard.
16:05
<@Thalass>
augh and running live usb (finally magically made it boot?) and bonnie++ says it can't write to a particular boot sector. bah hdd fail
16:21
<@TheWatcher>
bonnie++?
16:22
<@TheWatcher>
Oh, benchmarking program?
16:25
<@TheWatcher>
Why's a benchmarker need to write to the boot sector? And in any event, it may be being prevented from doing writes there if you've turned on boot sector protection in the bios, I guess.
16:27
<@Thalass>
I was looking for a hdd test program, because the mint liveusb installer kept reporting a read/write error and that's what came up. >.>
16:35
<@TheWatcher>
Is the error during setting up the packages and stuff, or when it's installing grub/lilo?
16:37
<@Thalass>
Right at the beginning, iirc. Possibly it's the usb stick i'm using. USB in general has been flaky, so far.
16:50
<@Thalass>
And now, having tried again, mint is installed on that hard drive and working. I'm too chicken to try the bluetooth usb thingy again, mind you.
16:50
<@Thalass>
pondering updating motherboard bios, as the update contains "usb compatibility" updates
17:02
<@Thalass>
Well... It has booted, is running nvidia drivers for the graphics, and the bluetooth mouse is working so far. OK then.
17:03
<@TheWatcher>
\o/
17:05
<@Thalass>
I didn't change anything. It just decided to be nice.
17:18
<@simon_>
I'm reviewing some C++ code: I've got 5 benchmarks that all depend on a utils/ with a ParseInput.h that contains a bunch of functions. I assume it is more idiomatic if this is located in ParseInput.cpp (with constants and prototypes in ParseInput.h) and is either compiled separately or the .cpp file is listed when compiling the compilation unit for the various benchmarks.
17:22
<@simon_>
my only concern is this: some of the benchmarks use OpenCL, so I don't know if I can compile a ParseInput.o. there isn't any GPU-specific code in it, so I suppose that isn't a problem.
17:22
<@simon_>
I am apparently not asking any questions, just thinking aloud. :)
17:44
<@simon_>
can g++ inline functions across compilation units?
