Blurgh. I'm 29 and thoroughly geeky. You'd think I understand kinetic energy by now.
12:47
< Rhamphoryncus>
Everybody just repeats the formula. Nobody explains why a constant thrust increases energy quadratically
13:14
<@Anna>
Because a constant trust gives an acceleration (that's compensated slightly for by drag/friction)

< gnolam>
Rhamphoryncus: you can derive it from W = F*d and F = m*a.
13:40
< Rhamphoryncus>
hrm.. so it's not just the amount of deceleration but how rapidly it must be done?

I don't know if I like gnome3
16:04
< Noah>
Someone tell me if I like gnome3 please
16:04
< gnolam>
You don't. If you're sane.
16:05
< Noah>
My sanity is also debatable.
16:05
< Noah>
It seems pretty hard to customize
16:05
< gnolam>
Yeees. It's GNOME.
16:05
< Noah>
Didn't seem that hard with gnome 2

Noah: The GNOME attitude in a nutshell: http://blogs.gnome.org/hughsie/2011/02/02/is-gnome-3-going-to-melt-your-laptop/

(First time I came across that, I wondered if it was satire. Sadly, it isn't.)
16:07
< Noah>
It certainly sounds like satire

"This will upset some macbook owners if they connect a projector and then shut the lid. Some macbook laptops overheat when the lid is closed and not suspended, leaving the owner with a hot white glooopy mess when they finish their presentation. This is something we can do something about, but I need the help of the community to work out what makes and models need to be blacklisted."
16:08
< Noah>
Someone should've bought a better laptop
16:19
< Noah>
Well, over all, I'm liking Linux Mint, it was easier to get the nvidia drivers going, and now my UI is smooooth. Everything seems to work out off the disk, like my wifi drivers (LED including), autoscrolling with middle button on UltraNav. The thinkvantage button isn't working, so I'll look into that later, but the Fn keys seem to work fine. So that leaves me with just that stupid blue button (which I've been using with guake) and getting th

e biometric reader working
16:28
< Namegduf>
The GNOME approach to UI design is to make easy things slightly easier and make difficult things impossible, which is silly because it is the latter which makes Linux unrealistic as an option for most users.
16:31
< Noah>
I don't know if I'll stick with gnome3 for now. Will have to try some of the other options and see

My map projection can be so much simpler
17:04
<~Vornicus>
It can be just one diamond instead of four, why did this not occur to me
17:04
<@Tamber>
Too close to the problem, perhaps?

Actually-- does it help? I suspect it may not because it may give really strange shapes for places near the IDL
17:05
<~Vornicus>
(on the other hand the code itself is much, much simpler)

Item systems are hard!
22:51
< Janus>
Not sure what to do about special items, that are bigger than like, other items. Like, a fishingpole has a lot of qualities and subitems, where as a stick of chewing gum would only have flavour and chewed variables

Slightly more seriously, the Avernum game, for example, don't care about any properties of special items. They are simply a flag and a name.
23:18
<&McMartin>
As a rule, objects aren't disassemblable.
